VOGA teaching kids about future careers in Virginia's Oil and Natural Gas Industry
In recent years VOGA has made it a priority to reach out to youth with information about future careers and facts about the industry.
October is designated as National Energy Awareness month giving VOGA several opportunities to share our information.
As an extension of the United Way of Southwest Virginia Ignite Program, the Careers Expo for Youth took place on September 25-26 at the Washington County Fairgrounds. Over 4,000 7th grade students from Southwest Virginia (17 school systems, 46 schools) participated throughout the course of two days. With the assistance of Jason Richardson of CNX Resources, Gus Janson of Enervest Operating, and VOGA's Public Relations Manager Beth Stockner, VOGA was able to discuss future careers, play the "Wheel of Energy", and talk about how natural gas is produced and used.
VOGA was provided with another opportunity October 4, 2018 when nearly 160 Dickenson County 6th graders had the opportunity to learn about the industries that produce and support energy in southwest Virginia at the 2018 Energy Expo. This was the seventh Energy Expo held in Dickenson County. Prior to the expo, the school system hosted several special assemblies where presenters were able to provide expert in depth knowledge of the science and technology required to produce energy. VOGA member, Gus Janson of Enervest Operating was the main presenter at an assembly providing information on Geology within the energy industry.
The day of the expo students had a chance to see a drone used in coal mining engineering projects, how a natural gas well works, mine rescue teams in action, how a drill digs a well and other hands-on demonstrations from the energy industries. During the Expo the students were able to gain hands on opportunities by visiting booths set up by the energy industries and DMME. Displays and onsite representatives were provided by several VOGA companies including; CNX Resources, Lee Supply, Nichols Construction, Noah Horn Well Drilling as well as a VOGA display.
VOGA will be representing the industry at several more career/ educational fairs and events throughout the months of October and November including the debut of the long awaited Energy Quiz Bowl sponsored by API, VOGA, VCEA, and the 4H Virginia Cooperative Extension/Va Tech in early November.
